Quality Education

Training

Literacy4Prosperity, our teacher-training programme, was launched by MuKaranta in 2023. This is a pilot literacy programme for year 1 children in Jigawa State. We are grateful to Bono Energy Ltd for their sponsorship, which has enabled the delivery of this programme.

Working in partnership with the Jigawa State Government and the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Literacy4Prosperity is in 198 schools across 12 LGA’s (Local Government Areas) and we have reached over 22,000 pupils. The programme is designed to improve the capacity and capabilities of teachers in order to teach Hausa literacy in Jigawa State. After their three-day Training Workshop in January 2023, a total of 12 Master Trainers (MTs) were tasked with cascading the training to 240 primary 1 teachers and the head teacher of participating schools.

The training is designed to equip the MTs with a new Hausa literacy teaching approach, or pedagogy, embedded with Hausa phonics skills for effective classroom delivery. This in turn improves pupil literacy levels in Hausa.

Classrooms are very crowded! Using the class book (Littafi na ɗaya) and the Teacher’s Guide (Jagoran Malami) empowers teachers to structure, sequence and plan learning goals, for the purpose of meeting pupils learning needs and expectations.

Results

The endline assessment for Literacy4Prosperity revealed exceptional results. On the basis of our success, all stakeholders – including our sponsor, Bono Energy – are keen to scale up to year 2 and include more schools in the participating LGA’s.

MuKaranta looks forward to rolling out the training and resources programme to other states.
