WELCOME to MuKaranta! Or as we say in Hausa, Sannu da zuwa! Our flagship programme is Mu Karanta Hausa, which focuses on mother-tongue literacy for primary school pupils in northern Nigeria, where Hausa is the lingua franca.
‘Mu karanta’ means ‘Let’s read’
Using Phonics and Look-and-say methods, MuKaranta resources make learning to read easy and fun. With familiar stories, songs and word-play, children enjoy the riches of their local culture and traditions – whilst at the same time learning the foundations of literacy.
As well as books for the classroom, our MuKaranta literacy programme includes Hausa Phonics flashcards for fun learning, and a training programme to empower teachers.
Research shows that literacy learnt in a language that children already understand is the bedrock of a good education. The benefits include:
- better learning outcomes
- greater parental participation
- increased school enrolment.
Effective literacy learning then paves the way for the higher levels of education in English or another language. We are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, with its focus on quality education – for girls, boys, adults and all.
